Lookalikes and how to tell them apart
Often sold as “2.54 mm”, but the pitch is 2.5 mm. On a long connector the difference adds up and the pins no longer line up with a 2.54 mm header; on 2 or 3 pins it may squeeze in.
| Connector | Pitch | Latch | Per contact |
|---|---|---|---|
| JST XH | 2.5 mm | no, held by friction | 3 A |
| Molex KK 254 | 2.54 mm | no, held by friction | 4 A |
| Dupont | 2.54 mm | depends on the version | 3 A |
| JST PH | 2.0 mm | no, held by friction | 2 A |
Before you plug it in
2.5 mm (JST XH, JST SM) and 2.54 mm (Dupont, Molex KK) look the same on a short connector. Measure across ten pins: 22.5 mm against 22.86 mm.
Crimp terminals need the crimper die made for their size: pliers crush them and the contact works loose. Housings and terminals of different series don’t mix, even at the same pitch.
The current rating is a maximum per contact, at the wire size the maker states. With thinner wire, or with every contact carrying current, stay well below it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the pitch of the JST XH connector?
2.5 mm between the centres of two neighbouring contacts.
How much current can a JST XH connector carry?
3 A per contact with AWG 22 wire, at up to 250 V, according to JST.
Figures from the makers’ catalogues and datasheets. Ratings are maxima: derate for thin wire and for many loaded contacts.
