Lookalikes and how to tell them apart
5.5 × 2.1 and 5.5 × 2.5 look identical: only the hole differs. 3.5 × 1.35 is the small one on compact devices. A drill bit or a jack whose size you know makes a quick gauge.
Before you plug it in
A 5.5 × 2.5 mm plug goes onto a jack with a 2.0 mm pin but sits loose and can lose contact; a 5.5 × 2.1 mm plug won’t go onto a 2.5 mm pin. Check the polarity symbol on the adapter too.
The current rating is a maximum per contact, at the wire size the maker states. With thinner wire, or with every contact carrying current, stay well below it.
