ENS160 vs CCS811

7 of the 13 features in our table differ between the ENS160 and the CCS811.

ScioSense

ENS160

TVOC · eCO₂ (estimated) · air-quality index · I²C/SPI · 1.71 to 1.98 V

ScioSense’s metal-oxide sensor: TVOC, eCO₂ and an air-quality index (1 to 5) computed on the chip.

Watch out: 3 minutes of warm-up, and 1 hour the first time. eCO₂ is estimated, not measured. The chip runs at 1.8 V, so use a board with a regulator.

CCS811

TVOC · eCO₂ (estimated) · I²C

The older metal-oxide sensor with eCO₂ and TVOC, still in many tutorials.

Watch out: Discontinued; the ENS160 replaces it. Its eCO₂ is estimated from VOCs.

When to choose the CCS811

In our table the CCS811 has nothing the ENS160 lacks, and it is discontinued: choose it only for price or a board you already have.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the ENS160 and the CCS811?

The ENS160 offers SPI as well as I²C and a part still in production; in our table the CCS811 has no advantage of its own apart from price, and it is discontinued.

Which is better for air quality, the ENS160 or the CCS811?

Both give TVOC and eCO₂ (estimated). Only on the ENS160: air-quality index.

Can I replace the ENS160 with the CCS811?

Often yes: both use I²C. Change the driver or, in ESPHome, the component (ens160_i2c → ccs811). The I²C address changes too (0x52/0x53 → 0x5A/0x5B).
