5 of the 14 features in our table differ between the BME680 and the BME280.
Bosch Sensortec
BME680
±1 °C · ±3 %RH · I²C/SPI · 1.71 to 3.6 V
Adds a gas sensor to the BME280’s temperature, humidity and pressure, for an air-quality index through Bosch’s BSEC library.
Watch out: The gas heater draws about 9 to 13 mA while it runs and warms the chip. The raw output is a resistance; the index needs BSEC (bme68x_bsec2 in ESPHome).
Bosch Sensortec
BME280
±1 °C · ±3 %RH · I²C/SPI · 1.71 to 3.6 V
Temperature, humidity and pressure in one I²C or SPI chip: the classic weather-station sensor.
Watch out: ±1 °C and ±3 %RH, less accurate than a dedicated humidity sensor. Check the chip: the BMP280 looks almost the same and has no humidity sensor.

What is the difference between the BME680 and the BME280?
The BME680 offers a gas sensor for an air-quality index and better absolute accuracy. The BME280 offers a ready-made configuration in this site’s ESPHome generator.
Which is more accurate, the BME680 or the BME280?
Typical datasheet figures: temperature ±1 °C for the BME680 and ±1 °C for the BME280; humidity ±3 %RH and ±3 %RH. Placement matters as much as accuracy: keep either away from the board’s warm parts.
Can I replace the BME680 with the BME280?
Often yes: both use I²C or SPI. Change the driver or, in ESPHome, the component (bme680 → bme280_i2c).
