BME280 vs BMP280

4 of the 12 features in our table differ between the BME280 and the BMP280.

Bosch Sensortec

BME280

±1 hPa · 300 to 1,100 hPa · I²C/SPI · 1.71 to 3.6 V

Temperature, humidity and pressure in one I²C or SPI chip: the classic weather-station sensor.

Watch out: ±1 °C and ±3 %RH, less accurate than a dedicated humidity sensor. Check the chip: the BMP280 looks almost the same and has no humidity sensor.

BMP280

±1 hPa · 300 to 1,100 hPa · I²C/SPI · 1.71 to 3.6 V

Bosch’s barometer: ±1 hPa absolute, ±0.12 hPa relative (about ±1 m of altitude), 2.8 µA at one reading a second.

Watch out: Bosch recommends the BMP390 for new designs. No humidity, and 1.71 to 3.6 V only: on 5 V, use a board with a regulator.

When to choose the BMP280

In our table the BMP280 has nothing the BME280 lacks, and it is at the end of its life: choose it only for price or a board you already have.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the BME280 and the BMP280?

The BME280 offers humidity as well as temperature, a part still in production, and a ready-made configuration in this site’s ESPHome generator; in our table the BMP280 has no advantage of its own apart from price, and it is at the end of its life.

Which is more accurate, the BME280 or the BMP280?

Absolute accuracy, for weather readings: ±1 hPa for the BME280, ±1 hPa for the BMP280. Relative accuracy, for altitude: ±0.12 hPa and ±0.12 hPa.

Can I replace the BME280 with the BMP280?

Often yes: both use I²C or SPI. Change the driver or, in ESPHome, the component (bme280_i2c → bmp280_i2c).
